BodyFX Fat and Cellulite Reduction

1Excess fatty tissue and cellulite is a common problem for many women and men. BodyFX is an innovative technology designed to break down fat and minimise the appearance of dimples without the need for surgery. Consultant dermatologist Dr Anne Farrell explains how BodyFX can help contour the body and smooth the skin using radiofrequency energy.

What is BodyFX?

BodyFX is a new non-invasive treatment which has been approved by the FDA (the powerful government regulatory body in the United States) to produce long lasting reduction of fat. It can also tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. The results are not as dramatic as liposuction, but this technique is a non-invasive alternative and therefore does not carry the risk of anaesthesia.

How does BodyFX work?

BodyFX uses a combination of vacuum suction and radiofrequency to gently tighten the superficial and deep layers of skin and to smooth dimples. Using short bursts of high energy radiofrequency, BodyFX can make tiny holes in the fat cell walls, which causes them to eventually break down. This combination is designed to reduce fat and also firm and even the overlying skin.

How safe is the treatment?

Studies for the FDA have demonstrated that the treatment can be performed safely. To maximize comfort there is a temperature feedback monitor within the device head which constantly monitors and controls the temperature of the treated site.

What does the treatment involve and what does it feel like?

bodyfx-full-arm-handpieceThe treatment feels like suction combined with a gentle heating and pulling sensation. No anaesthetic gel should be needed. Most patients find the experience to be comfortable. After the procedure, the skin may look a little flushed for a few minutes, but the skin should not be broken. Normal activities usually can be resumed immediately afterwards, including swimming.

Can it be used on all skin colours?

Yes, because BodyFX uses radiofrequency energy, which does not heat the surface of the skin. As a result, it should be suitable to use on all skin colours.

What results can be seen?

The results can vary between individuals, but the FDA studies reported a positive response in most patients after a series of treatments. The amount of fat lost varied between individuals, but some patients reported up to a cup of fat being lost after a series of treatments. On average, 6-8 weekly sessions are recommended. When treating cellulite, maintenance treatments are usually recommended every few months.
