Vitiligo is a commonly encountered skin condition where the immune system starts to remove the pigment producing cells in the skin (melanocytes). The exact cause is unknown but it is caused by the immune system becoming overactive and specifically removing the melanocytes. It can start at any age.
Prescription creams can be used including steroid creams (for short periods only), macrolide creams and newer classes of creams called JAK Inhibitors (although these are currently expensive).
Prescription tablets that act on the over active immune system are also sometimes used.
Light therapy can also be used either by being referred to a hospital offering phototherapy or as a home therapy under dermatologist supervision.
