Profhilo® is a unique form of injectable hyaluronic acid (the natural lubricating gel that occurs in our skin and joints and found in many fillers) which is prepared in a manner to make the particles of hyaluronic acid smaller and less adherent, so that once injected they spread out relatively quickly. They hydrate the skin by holding water and stimulate some new collagen production. They also stimulate elastin production.
The product comes as a clear jelly in a syringe which is injected as several small blebs just under the skin. These blebs disperses from the injection sites within a few hours and migrate into the surrounding skin. The sensation is just like a superficial sting and numbing cream can be applied beforehand to overcome this. Over the course of the next few weeks it acts to hold water in the skin so hydrating it and it also stimulates production of collagen, but what is different from other fillers is that it stimulates elastin production. Elastin is the fibrous network in the dermis which gives the skin elasticity and suppleness. Like collagen, elastin is also broken down by sun damage and age, and its breakdown contributes to the sagging that occurs with time.
It is usually recommended that two initial Profhilo® treatments are done a month apart. However, more treatments can be done after that as necessary to achieve the desired result.
After each treatment there is very little recovery—just a few pinpoint marks where the product was injected. Occasionally there may be a small bruise that settles in a few days.
The improvements start to be visible after 3–12 weeks.
Profhilo® can be done at any site on the body, but is most frequently done on the cheeks, lower face and neck.
It works well in combination with other treatments such as Fotona skin tightening, microneedling and Fraxel Restore laser.
